NECO SSCE 2026: Fees, Registration, Grading, Results and Certificates

NECO is the National Examinations Council, the federal body that runs the SSCE alongside WAEC. Its June to July examination is the internal SSCE, sat by SS3 students through their school. The certificate carries the same weight as WAEC’s for university admission, it can be combined with a WAEC result to make up your five credits, and NECO states it is valid for a lifetime.

What the ₦30,000 covers

NECO is unusually transparent about this, and publishes the breakdown with payment codes. Unlike WAEC, which publishes no fee schedule at all, you can check NECO’s numbers against a signed official document.

Other charges exist and catch schools out. Late registration adds ₦5,000. A centre presenting fewer than twenty candidates is treated as unviable and charged ₦70,000. A paper remark costs ₦20,000. Late continuous assessment upload costs ₦40,000.

Registration is school-only, and the deadline holds

NECO’s internal SSCE is explicitly not open to private candidates. If you have left school, the November external examination is your route, and it is a different registration entirely.

The 2026 window ran from 19 January to 25 May, with late registration from 26 to 29 May. NECO’s guidelines stated plainly that there would not be any extension. NIN is compulsory for every candidate, and transfers of SS3 students between schools are prohibited during the registration period.

NECO now runs in two modes at once

The 2026 SSCE was dual mode: computer-based examination at some centres, paper and pencil at others. Schools are notified which mode applies to them. This mirrors what WAEC is doing and neither body has published a date for a full switch to computer-based testing.

One structural change worth knowing: the CAS3 upload has been abolished. Continuous assessment is now submitted termly for SS1 and SS2, in January, April and August, rather than in one batch at the end.

How NECO grades, and what nobody can verify

NECO uses the same nine-grade letter structure as WAEC: A1 through F9, with A1 to C6 counting as credits. That much is certain.

Checking your result

Results go up at results.neco.gov.ng. You need a result checker token, which costs ₦2,000 and can be used five times. Buy it at results.neco.gov.ng/tokens.

Five uses is deliberately generous: the token is designed to be shared with parents, schools and organisations that need to see the result. One token per candidate is normally enough for the whole admission season.

Certificates, and the cost of losing one

Internal SSCE certificates go to the school, the same as WAEC. External candidates collect from any NECO office for a ₦500 collection charge.

Unlike WAEC, NECO will reprint a certificate, but the price is steep enough to function as a deterrent.

NECO’s ₦7,500 safekeeping service is genuinely worth considering. Against a ₦50,000 reprint, and against WAEC’s position of no replacement at all, paying NECO to hold the document is cheap insurance.

Is NECO accepted everywhere WAEC is?

NECO’s own FAQ states that the SSCE is accepted for admission into Nigerian universities provided the candidate meets the institution’s minimum requirements, that it can be combined with a WAEC result, and that it is valid for a lifetime.

One honest caveat. JAMB is consistently reported to accept WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS results for O’level upload, but we could not find a JAMB page naming those bodies. The parity is real in practice and is not in dispute. It simply is not documented on JAMB’s own site.
