We publish figures that change every year, drawn partly from sources that contradict each other. We will get things wrong. When we do, we want to hear about it and we want to fix it quickly.
How to report an error
Use the contact page. Tell us the page, the figure you believe is wrong, and where you saw the correct one. A link to an official document or a photograph of a school notice is ideal, but tell us even if you have neither.
Corrections about a fee, a deadline or an examination date are urgent, because people act on them with money. Those go to the front of the queue.
What we do about it
- Factual error. We correct the text, update the Last verified date, and add a dated correction note at the foot of the page saying what changed.
- Figure now out of date. We update it and re-date the page. Superseded figures stay visible where they are still useful, labelled with the cycle they applied to.
- A source we relied on turns out to be wrong. We correct the page and say in the Sources block that the source was unreliable, so the next reader knows.
- We cannot confirm either version. We mark the figure as unverified on the page rather than quietly leaving the old one standing.
What we will not do
We do not silently change a figure and pretend it was always that. If a number moves, the correction note says so.
We do not remove a correction note later to tidy the page up. The record stays.
We do not take down criticism. If you tell us we are wrong and we disagree, we will say so and explain why, on the page.
