The BECE is the Basic Education Certificate Examination, sat at the end of JSS3 to move into SS1. It is the exam almost every Nigerian calls “Junior WAEC”. That name is wrong, and the mistake is not harmless: it sends parents looking for a WAEC portal that does not exist, and leaves them unsure who to contact when something goes wrong with a result.
There is no Junior WAEC in NigeriaWAEC runs no junior-level examination in Nigeria at all. Its own Nigerian FAQ lists exactly two examinations: WASSCE for School Candidates and WASSCE for Private Candidates. WAEC does run a BECE, but in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia. The Nigerian nickname is a leftover from before 1999, when WAEC was the only examination body in the country and NECO did not yet exist. It has had no administrative meaning here for more than two decades.
So who actually runs your child’s BECE?
One of two bodies, and which one depends entirely on what kind of school your child attends.

If your child is at a state government school or an approved private school, your BECE is a state examination. The Lagos State Examinations Board, for example, describes itself as an agency of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, and its BECE documentation never mentions WAEC or NECO at all. Kano, Rivers, Kaduna and every other state run their own equivalent.
The practical consequence is simple. There is no single national BECE portal and no single national result checker. Anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. Ask your child’s school which body registered them, because that is the only body that can help you.
Who sits the BECE
Final-year JSS3 students, usually aged fourteen or fifteen. It is a school-candidate examination throughout: there is no private or external BECE route. Registration is done by the school, not the family.
NECO requires a minimum of twenty candidates for a school to serve as a centre, which is why some small federal schools cluster with a neighbour.

It varies by body, which is another reason the “one national exam” assumption causes trouble.

A discrepancy we will not paper overNECO’s website fee table gives the 2026 BECE fee as ₦13,959, while NECO’s own signed registration guidelines PDF and its BECE page text both give ₦13,595. The table entry appears to be a digit transposition. We publish ₦13,595 because two official sources agree on it against one. Confirm with the school before paying.
What subjects are examined
Between eleven and twelve, drawn from the national basic education curriculum. Lagos State examines twelve: Mathematics, English Studies, Basic Science and Technology, Nigerian Languages, Christian Religious Studies or Islamic Studies, Cultural and Creative Arts, Business Studies, French, National Values Education, Pre-Vocational Studies, History, and Arabic as an option.
Because the curriculum is national, the subject list is broadly the same wherever your child sits. The examining body changes, the syllabus does not.
How the BECE is graded
NECO grades the BECE on a five-point letter scale.

What the result is actually for
Promotion into SS1, and nothing beyond that. The BECE is not an admission qualification. It does not feed into WASSCE, it is not requested by universities, and no employer will ever ask for it.
This matters because families sometimes spend money on BECE “upgrade” services in the belief that the grade will follow the child. It will not. What the BECE does determine, in some schools, is stream placement: whether your child goes into the science, arts or commercial track at SS1. That is the decision worth caring about, and it is settled at your child’s school, not at NECO.
The BECE is not the Common Entrance
These two get confused constantly, partly because NECO runs both. They sit at opposite ends of junior secondary school.
- NCEE, the National Common Entrance Examination, is sat by final-year primary pupils to get into JSS1 at a Federal Unity College.
- BECE is sat at the end of JSS3 to move out of junior secondary into SS1.
