JAMB UTME Use of English Past Questions: How to Work Them Properly

How to work JAMB UTME Use of English past papers so they diagnose your gaps instead of confirming what you already know.

Working Use of English past papers for JAMB UTME is a diagnostic exercise, and the diagnosis depends on the format. Here it is computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together.

Why the format changes the method

The papers are computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and they are marked by machine. There is no method mark, no partial credit and no examiner to persuade.

The preparation that fits it: speed and coverage rather than depth. A candidate who knows a topic thoroughly but slowly is at a disadvantage here that would not exist in a written examination.

Working them properly

  1. Sit a whole paper at the printed duration. The first attempt will be uncomfortable, and that discomfort is the diagnostic.
  2. Mark it before looking at anything. Checking answers as you go turns the exercise into reading.
  3. Tag every question to a topic area. This converts a score into a plan.
  4. Sort the errors. Never taught it, forgot it, or ran out of time. Three problems, three fixes.
  5. Repeat monthly with a different year. Four papers analysed beat fifteen read.

The topic areas to tag against

  • Comprehension passages.
  • Cloze and lexical questions.
  • Sentence interpretation.
  • Oral forms, stress and intonation in written form.
  • Antonyms, synonyms and word usage.
  • The prescribed novel where the Board sets one.

What this subject punishes

Working past papers without knowing what the marker penalises wastes the exercise. In Use of English the recurring losses are:

  • Reading the comprehension passage twice and running out of time for the rest.
  • Guessing on the oral-forms questions, which are learnable and predictable.
  • Skipping the prescribed novel, which is free marks for anyone who read it.

It is compulsory and it has more questions than any other UTME subject, so a weak performance here cannot be offset elsewhere.

The habit that moves the mark

Do the oral-forms and lexis questions first. They are fast and they are the most reliably scorable part of the paper.

Match the papers to your syllabus period

Syllabuses carry year ranges and subjects are revised. Papers from a period governed by a different syllabus can send you into content no longer examined and leave out content that now is. Prefer papers within or close to your syllabus range, and treat older ones as practice in technique rather than as a guide to content.

Leaked material is not a past paper

Material sold before a paper as the paper itself is the route to a cancelled result. A past paper is one already sat and already marked. The two are not on a spectrum.

What you are practising for

There is no pass. There is a rank, and the only question is whether enough candidates scored below you. One sitting a year, in a session assigned to you that cannot be changed.

Quick answers on Use of English

How many years should I work?

Four papers properly analysed beat fifteen read. The analysis is where the value is, not the volume.

Is Use of English compulsory?

It is compulsory.

What is it required for?

Every course, because it is compulsory for every candidate.

How many papers are there?

One computer-based section within the single UTME sitting, and it carries the largest question count of the four subjects.

What makes it hard?

It is compulsory and it has more questions than any other UTME subject, so a weak performance here cannot be offset elsewhere.

What is the most common way candidates lose marks?

Reading the comprehension passage twice and running out of time for the rest.

Where do I get the official syllabus?

From JAMB, on its own site, free. Check the year range on the cover before you use it.

Do the questions repeat?

No. New papers are set each diet. Past papers are a diagnostic, not a prediction.
