Yomi BlackPast questions are the most over-bought and under-used resource in Nigerian examination preparation. Candidates acquire ten years of them and then read them like a textbook, which is the one method that produces almost no benefit. The value is not in the questions. It is in what they reveal about the syllabus.

Why reading them does almost nothing
Reading a question you already have the answer to feels like studying and produces the feeling of competence without the competence. You recognise the material, you nod, you move on. Recognition is not recall, and the examination tests recall under time pressure with no answer key in sight.
The second failure is subtler. Candidates use past questions to guess what will come up. A topic that appeared three years running can vanish, and a topic absent for five years can carry a fifth of the paper. Betting your preparation on a pattern inferred from four papers is not strategy, it is superstition with a study timetable attached.
Practising in the right format
Papers here are objective and theory papers, with a continuous assessment component in most states and they are marked by the examining authority for that BECE, federal or state, which are not the same examination. Practice in a different format trains a skill this examination does not test.
The preparation that fits it: three years of junior secondary, examined at once, with far less past-paper material in circulation than the senior certificates.

How many years should I do?
Four papers properly analysed beat fifteen papers read. Frequency and analysis beat volume.
Are old papers still useful if the syllabus changed?
As practice in technique, yes. As a guide to content, no. Check the year range on your syllabus and prefer papers within or close to it.
Is leaked material the same thing?
No. Material sold before a paper is the route to a cancelled result. Past questions are papers already sat and already marked. The two are not on a spectrum.

What they are genuinely for
- Mapping the syllabus onto reality. The syllabus lists what may be examined. Past papers show the depth at which it actually is. The gap between the two is where candidates over-prepare and under-prepare within the same subject.
- Exposing what your school skipped. Schools drop parts of the syllabus and tend to drop the same parts every year. A topic that appears in past papers and has never appeared in your classroom is the highest-value thing you can find.
- Building stamina and pacing. Knowing the material and being able to produce it in the time allowed are separate skills, and only one of them is taught.
The method, in the order it works
- Turn the current syllabus into a checklist first. One line per topic, with a box.
- Sit one whole paper under timed conditions. Not a section. The whole paper, at the duration printed on it, with no notes. The first one will be unpleasant. That is the diagnostic.
- Mark it honestly, then tag every question to a syllabus topic. This is the step nobody does and the step that produces everything useful.
- Sort your wrong answers into three piles. Never taught it. Taught it and forgot it. Knew it and ran out of time. Each needs a different response.
- Fix the never-taught pile first. Highest return per hour, because you are going from zero rather than from sixty per cent.
- Repeat with a different year, monthly. Four papers properly analysed beat fifteen papers read.
Work the whole paper, then mark. Checking each answer as you go turns a diagnostic into a reading exercise and destroys the only information the exercise produces: what you can do unaided, under time.

Why this examination rewards analysis over volume
BECE is the only examination on this site that most candidates do not choose to sit. It is the promotion gate, and its main consequence is which senior secondary school will take you.

The practical papers deserve more than their share
Where a subject has a practical or an alternative to practical, that paper is where marks quietly disappear, because it tests procedure and presentation rather than knowledge. Candidates from schools without working equipment are examined on skills they have never performed, and past practical papers are the only realistic substitute.
