IJMB Registration: The Steps, the Deadlines and What Goes Wrong

Who registers you for IJMB, what to check before the entry closes, and the five failures that cost candidates a year.

Registration for IJMB is a sequence, and each step fails for a different reason. Getting it right is mostly a matter of doing the slow parts early, because the parts that go wrong are the ones that depend on somebody other than you.

The entry route in full

Register at an accredited centre, complete the session, sit the examination.

If you are entered by a school, understand what that means in practice. The school does the typing. The school holds the deadline. The school is the channel through which every later correction travels. A candidate who never sees their own entry before it is submitted is trusting somebody else’s data entry with their certificate.

What people ask about this

What happens if my name is spelled wrongly?

It is far cheaper to fix before the entry closes than after the certificate is printed. Raise it with whoever holds your entry the day you notice it, and get the correction confirmed in writing.

Can I change a subject after submitting?

Sometimes, within the window, and never easily. Check the printed entry before it is submitted rather than relying on being able to correct it.

What should I keep?

The entry confirmation, the photo card or slip, every payment reference and your registration number. If anything goes wrong later, those documents are your case.

What does it cost?

Tuition for the year plus examination fees, generally cheaper than JUPEB.

Who actually does my registration?

Register at an accredited centre, complete the session, sit the examination.

Choosing your subjects at entry

Three subjects in a combination matched to the intended degree. The compulsory element is A three-subject combination matched to your intended degree.

Choose the rest by working backwards from the course you intend to read, not forwards from the subjects you enjoy. A combination that does not carry the subjects your course names is not a near miss at admission time. It is a disqualification, and it is discovered a year too late.

Check the printed entry, not the promise

Registration is often done in bulk. Ask to see your own entry, on screen or on paper, before it is submitted. Correcting a wrong subject after submission is slower than choosing the right one, and sometimes impossible.

The five things that go wrong

  1. A name mismatch. The name on your entry must match your other records. Fixing the underlying record is not the examining body’s process and it is not fast.
  2. A missed deadline. Entry windows close on a date, not on a mood. A missed window means the next series.
  3. A wrong subject. Entered by somebody who did not ask you.
  4. A fake or failed PIN or token. Buy early enough that a failure is recoverable.
  5. Too few subjects. Count them yourself against the minimum.

What to keep

Keep the entry confirmation, the photo card or slip, every payment reference and the exact wording of your registration number in one place. If anything goes wrong afterwards, these documents are the whole of your case, and reconstructing them from memory months later is not possible.

Tuition for the year plus examination fees, generally cheaper than JUPEB.

Why the entry route matters more than the entry fee

IJMB is the older of the two A-level routes and is run out of Ahmadu Bello University. Its recognition map differs from JUPEB’s, which is the only question that should decide between them.

The route you enter by determines what you can do when something goes wrong. Through the centre and the Board. Candidates think about that on the day a problem appears; the decision was made at registration.

The cost of getting it wrong

One academic session so a registration error is not a delay of weeks. It is a wait for the next opportunity, and in a competitive admission cycle that is a year of your life bought with a typing mistake.

What registration commits you to

You are entering an examination that is written examinations per subject, with practicals where relevant, at the end of the programme. One academic session.

Three subjects only, so each carries a third of your aggregate and there is nowhere to hide a weak one. A registration made without understanding that is a registration made blind.
