What IJMB Actually Costs, Including the Parts Nobody Budgets For

The IJMB entry fee, what it does not cover, and the costs candidates meet in the middle of the examination instead of before it.

What IJMB costs is not one number. There is the entry fee, and then there is everything the entry fee does not cover, which is where candidates are surprised.

What the entry fee buys

The entry fee registers you and admits you to the papers you entered. It does not buy the result-checking access, it does not buy any certificate service afterwards, and in subjects with a practical it rarely covers the materials.

Tuition for the year plus examination fees, generally cheaper than JUPEB.

Questions candidates actually ask

Is the syllabus free?

Yes. IJMB publishes it on its own site. Anyone charging you for it is charging for access you already have.

Why do the figures online disagree?

Because fees are set each cycle and old figures stay published. Take the number from the body’s own current announcement, not from a blog post with no date on it.

What else should I budget for?

Practical materials, transport across the whole examination period, result access, and one verification request if you will need a result sent to an institution.

Where do candidates lose money?

At the point where a PIN, token or scratch card is bought. Use accredited channels and buy early enough that a failure is recoverable.

What is the entry fee?

Tuition for the year plus examination fees, generally cheaper than JUPEB.

Does the entry fee cover checking my result?

No. Result access is generally a separate purchase, and it is the cost candidates most often forget.

The costs nobody budgets for

  • Result access. Checking a result generally needs a token, card or PIN bought separately.
  • Practical materials. Science, art, catering and trade subjects consume materials. Where the school does not supply them, the candidate does.
  • Travel. An examination spread over weeks is weeks of transport, and a centre you did not choose may not be near you.
  • Verification afterwards. Confirming a result to an institution or an embassy is a separate, paid process with its own document requirements.
  • A second attempt. The real cost of under-preparing is another full entry fee plus another year.
Where the fraud happens

The most common loss in this process is not the entry fee. It is money paid to somebody selling access to something the body publishes free, or selling a PIN that fails at the end of the window. Buy from accredited channels and buy early enough that a failure is recoverable.

What is free and worth having

The syllabus and the timetable are published by IJMB on its own site at no cost. Anyone charging you for either is charging for access you already have. Spend that money on past papers, or on the practical materials your school does not provide.

Budgeting honestly

Work out the total before the window opens: entry, result access, materials, transport for the full examination period, and a contingency for one verification request. A candidate who budgets only the entry fee meets the rest of the cost in the middle of the examination, which is the worst time to meet it.

Cost against what the result does

The grade you buy here is an aggregate used for Direct Entry at 200 level, with recognition strongest among northern Nigerian universities. Three subjects only, so each carries a third of your aggregate and there is nowhere to hide a weak one.

Weighed against that, the entry fee is rarely the number worth arguing about. One academic session.

What you are actually buying

IJMB is the older of the two A-level routes and is run out of Ahmadu Bello University. Its recognition map differs from JUPEB’s, which is the only question that should decide between them.

Set against that, the entry fee is rarely the expensive part of sitting an examination. The expensive part is the year, and the second-most expensive part is sitting it twice.

Where this one is unusually costly

Recognition is uneven by institution. The right way to choose between IJMB and JUPEB is to check which one your target university names, not which one is cheaper.
