Where the real one lives
Cambridge Assessment International Education publishes its syllabus itself. That is the copy to use. A syllabus reposted by a third party is a copy of unknown age, and the whole value of the document is that it tells you what is examined now.

Turn it into a checklist of one line per topic, then tick topics off against past papers rather than against your notes. The topics that stay unticked are the finding.
What if my school skipped a topic on it?

Does the syllabus tell me which books to read?

Check the date before you check the content
Open any syllabus you have been given and look for a year range. If there is none, you do not know what you are holding. If the range has ended, you are studying for an examination that has already been sat. Neither is a document to plan a year around.
Examining bodies keep old documents available, which is good practice and a trap. A published syllabus is not the same as a current subject. Before you spend a term on a subject, confirm it appears on the current entry list.
How to actually use it
Most candidates read a syllabus once, find it dull, and go back to past questions. The productive method uses both together, in one direction.
- Turn the syllabus into a checklist. One line per topic, with a box. That is the only form in which it is useful.
- Tick topics off against past questions, not against your notes. Work through several years of papers and mark which syllabus topic each question came from. Your notes tell you what you were taught. The papers tell you what is asked.
- Look at what stays unticked. Those are either topics that rarely appear, which you can deprioritise honestly, or topics you have never been taught, which is the more important finding.
- Check the weighting against the paper structure. Multiple components per subject, with practicals examined separately in the sciences. A component carrying a third of the marks deserves a third of the preparation, which is almost never how candidates split their time.
- Re-check once a year. Documents get replaced between diets.
Anyone charging you for it is charging for access you already have. Spend the money on past papers instead, or on the practical materials your school does not provide.

The candidates hurt by a revision are never the ones who read the announcement. They are the ones working from material a year or two old, which looks identical to current material because nothing on it says otherwise.
The gap between the syllabus and the teaching
Schools skip parts of the syllabus, and they tend to skip the same parts every year, usually the topics that need equipment or that the teacher finds hardest. That gap is invisible from inside a classroom and obvious the moment you check the syllabus against past papers.

The syllabus is written for international depth, with syllabuses written to be taught over two years and examined in components, and it is examined as multiple components per subject, with practicals examined as separate papers in the sciences.
The syllabus assumes teaching most Nigerian schools do not provide, particularly in the sciences, which is why entering privately is difficult here. so the syllabus is not only a content list. It is a description of how much of that content you are expected to hold at once.
