When WAEC releases results
About 45 days after the final paper. That is WAEC’s own working target rather than a guarantee, and it has been close to accurate in recent years.
The 2026 school candidate results were released on 5 August 2026, 47 days after the last paper. Of 1,959,668 candidates registered, 1,950,726 sat. On release day 94.05 percent of results were fully processed and 5.95 percent were still processing, which is the usual pattern: a result that is missing on day one is not necessarily a problem.
What you need before you can check
- Your examination number. Ten digits, printed on your photocard and your registration slip. It is not your registration number and it is not your school’s centre number.
- The examination year and the month. School candidates select the May/June series. Private candidates select the series they sat.
- A result checker PIN and serial number. This is the part that costs money and the part that changed.
Lost your examination numberYour school holds the entry list and can give it to you, which costs nothing. WAEC also operates a paid recovery service, reported at ₦3,000. Ask your school first.
The PIN changed in 2026, and this catches people out
For years the result checker PIN came on a physical card you bought from a vendor and scratched off. Those cards are discontinued.
The PIN and serial are now generated electronically. You supply your NIN, you receive a one-time password to confirm it is you, and the PIN is issued against your identity. The practical effects are worth understanding because they change how you should buy:
- A PIN is now tied to a person, not floating on a card anyone can resell.
- You need a working phone line to receive the OTP.
- Street vendors and roadside agents no longer have legitimate stock to sell you.
A scam you will meet in AugustEvery result season brings sellers offering cheap WAEC PINs, “result upgrades”, or help releasing a withheld result. The PIN is ₦5,000 through an authorised merchant. Nobody sells it legitimately for less, nobody can change a grade after release, and nobody outside WAEC can release a withheld result. Money sent to these people does not come back.
Where to buy the e-PIN safely
WAEC lists seven authorised merchants. Buying through any of them is safe. Buying anywhere else is not.

Several of these operate through agent networks and banking apps you may already use, so in most towns there is a legitimate option within walking distance.
How to check, step by step
- Go to waecdirect.org. Check the address carefully; lookalike domains appear every August.
- Enter your ten-digit examination number.
- Select the examination year.
- Select the examination type, either the school candidate May/June series or the private candidate series you sat.
- Enter the card serial number and the PIN.
- Submit. Your grades appear on screen.
Print or screenshot the result the moment it appears. Do not rely on being able to return to it later, and do not assume you have unlimited checks.
Checking by SMS when the site is overloaded
In the first two or three days after a release, waecdirect.org carries close to two million candidates trying to check at once. It slows down and sometimes fails.
The SMS route avoids the queue entirely. Send your request to the shortcode 32327 at a cost of ₦30. It returns your grades as a text message. For a candidate who simply needs to know whether they passed, this is faster, cheaper and more reliable than fighting the website on release day.
Private candidates already have a PIN
If you sat WAEC GCE as a private candidate, your registration fee produced two PINs: one that completed your registration and a second one for checking your result. You do not need to buy anything.
Candidates throw the second PIN away with the registration paperwork every year and then pay ₦5,000 for something they already own. Find it before you buy.
If your result is not there
Three different things look similar on screen and have completely different remedies.

In 2026 WAEC withheld 167,486 results, 8.59 percent of everyone who sat, so a withheld result is common and usually resolvable. The full remedy process is on the WAEC hub page.
Getting the digital certificate
WAEC’s DigiCert service went live in February 2026 and issues a digital certificate within about 48 hours of a result, far ahead of the roughly 90 days for the physical document.
For anyone applying to an institution on a deadline, the digital certificate is usually what you need. Reported charges are ₦7,500 for digital certificate access and ₦3,500 to share it directly with an institution. Both figures come from press reporting rather than a WAEC price list, so confirm before paying.
