The examination itself is no paper at all. Credentials are screened rather than tested, and it is no marking. Verification of the qualification you already hold. The subject matters at the point where your existing qualification was earned, not here.
That is worth reading before you decide this is the right route, because the format suits some candidates and punishes others. Nothing to prepare. The preparation happened in the programme that gave you the qualification.

Can I sit DE if I have sat it before?
Yes. Rewriting is ordinary, and most candidates who combine results have sat more than once. A previous weak result has no effect on your entry.

What does not disqualify you
A large amount of folklore circulates about who is allowed to sit this examination. The following do not affect your eligibility to enter:
- Having sat it before, however many times.
- A weak result in a previous attempt.
- Being out of formal education, provided you use the route built for that.
- Sitting another body’s examination in the same year. Candidates do this deliberately, as insurance.
- Your school’s own progression rules, which are the school’s decision rather than the Council’s. They may send you to the private route; they do not end your eligibility.
What genuinely stops you
- An incomplete or unsubmitted entry. Fewer subjects than the minimum, or an entry never submitted, is not eligibility lost. It is an entry that does not exist.
- A missed window. Its own window each cycle, which opens after the UTME window, so a missed entry period is not a delay, it is a wait.
- An unresolved malpractice case. Deal with a cancelled or withheld result before you register again, through the body’s own channel rather than an intermediary.
- The wrong route. Entering as one type of candidate when you are the other wastes the cycle.
Entry details are taken once and carried for life. A name spelled differently from your national identity record, or a date of birth that does not match your other documents, becomes expensive later and cheap now. Check the entry before it closes.
Eligibility is not admission
Being eligible to sit says nothing about being admitted anywhere. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board decides who may be examined. Institutions decide what they will accept, including how many sittings they will combine and which subjects a course requires. Those are separate questions with separate answers, and treating an entry as an admission plan is the mistake that costs people a year.
