JAMB UTME General Mathematics Past Questions and What They Actually Tell You

How to work JAMB UTME General Mathematics past papers so they diagnose your gaps instead of confirming what you already know.

Past papers in JAMB UTME General Mathematics are only useful if you work them in this examination’s format. It is computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and practice that ignores that trains the wrong skill.

Computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together
Depth
A ranking depth rather than a teaching depth: breadth across the syllabus, tested fast, with no essay

Part of a score out of 400 that orders you against every other candidate for a fixed number of places

Why the format changes the method

The papers are computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and they are marked by machine. There is no method mark, no partial credit and no examiner to persuade.

The preparation that fits it: speed and coverage rather than depth. A candidate who knows a topic thoroughly but slowly is at a disadvantage here that would not exist in a written examination.

Working them properly

  1. Sit a whole paper at the printed duration. The first attempt will be uncomfortable, and that discomfort is the diagnostic.
  2. Mark it before looking at anything. Checking answers as you go turns the exercise into reading.
  3. Tag every question to a topic area. This converts a score into a plan.
  4. Sort the errors. Never taught it, forgot it, or ran out of time. Three problems, three fixes.
  5. Repeat monthly with a different year. Four papers analysed beat fifteen read.

The topic areas to tag against

  • Number and numeration.
  • Algebraic processes.
  • Mensuration.
  • Plane geometry.
  • Trigonometry.
  • Introductory calculus where the syllabus includes it.
  • Statistics and probability.

What this subject punishes

Working past papers without knowing what the marker penalises wastes the exercise. In General Mathematics the recurring losses are:

  • Skipping the working. Method marks are awarded for the steps, and an answer alone earns a fraction of what a worked solution earns.
  • Losing the units in mensuration questions.
  • Treating statistics as the easy topic and then meeting a question on grouped data that needs real technique.

It is cumulative. A weakness in algebra shows up again in trigonometry, in calculus and in the algebraic parts of statistics, so gaps compound rather than sit still.

The habit that moves the mark

Work past papers with a pen and no calculator first, then check. The arithmetic slips you make under pressure are the marks you are actually losing.

Match the papers to your syllabus period

Syllabuses carry year ranges and subjects are revised. Papers from a period governed by a different syllabus can send you into content no longer examined and leave out content that now is. Prefer papers within or close to your syllabus range, and treat older ones as practice in technique rather than as a guide to content.

Leaked material is not a past paper

Material sold before a paper as the paper itself is the route to a cancelled result. A past paper is one already sat and already marked. The two are not on a spectrum.

What you are practising for

There is no pass. There is a rank, and the only question is whether enough candidates scored below you. One sitting a year, in a session assigned to you that cannot be changed.

What people ask about General Mathematics

What is the most common way candidates lose marks?

Skipping the working. Method marks are awarded for the steps, and an answer alone earns a fraction of what a worked solution earns.

Where do I get the official syllabus?

From JAMB, on its own site, free. Check the year range on the cover before you use it.

Do the questions repeat?

No. New papers are set each diet. Past papers are a diagnostic, not a prediction.

How many years should I work?

Four papers properly analysed beat fifteen read. The analysis is where the value is, not the volume.

Is General Mathematics compulsory?

It is compulsory.

What is it required for?

Almost every course, and named explicitly for engineering, the sciences, economics, accounting and computer science.

How many papers are there?

Objective and essay, with the essay carrying the larger share of the marks.

What makes it hard?

It is cumulative. A weakness in algebra shows up again in trigonometry, in calculus and in the algebraic parts of statistics, so gaps compound rather than sit still.
