The JAMB UTME Physics Syllabus, and How to Turn It Into a Plan

What JAMB UTME Physics covers, how its papers are arranged, what makes it hard, and the specific ways candidates lose marks in it.

How JAMB examines this subject

The format is computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and it is marked by machine. There is no method mark, no partial credit and no examiner to persuade.

There is no pass. There is a rank, and the only question is whether enough candidates scored below you.

  1. Get the current syllabus from JAMB and check the year range on the cover.
  2. Write one line per topic area, with a box beside it.
  3. Work a past paper in this examination’s format, computer-based multiple choice only, and tag every question back to a line.
  4. Mark the lines your teaching has never covered. Those are the priority.
  5. Re-weight towards the component carrying the most marks. One sitting a year, in a session assigned to you that cannot be changed.

What a good grade here is worth

In this examination the grade is part of a score out of 400 that orders you against every other candidate for a fixed number of places. Physics is required for engineering of every kind, medicine at some institutions, physics, architecture and computer science, and course requirements are checked subject by subject, so a strong overall result with a weak grade here is a disqualification for the course that names it rather than a near miss.

Split your preparation roughly in the proportion the components are weighted. Candidates habitually over-prepare the part they enjoy and meet the other part for the first time in the hall.
