Most problems with this examination fall into a small number of shapes, and each shape has a different route out. The mistake that costs people a year is not choosing the wrong route. It is spending six weeks treating one problem as though it were another.
- Held or withheld
- Under investigation. Not a finding against you.
- Cancelled
- A finding has been made. Reviewable, slowly.
- Missing subject
- Usually mechanical: identification, shading or a duplicated entry.
- A grade you dispute
- Complaints and remark requests go to NECO directly.
- Where to complain
- NECO state offices and the national office
- Cost
- The complaint channel is free.
Name the problem correctly first
Read the exact wording on your statement before you do anything else. The states are different administrative conditions with different routes, and they are used interchangeably in conversation in a way that sends candidates down the wrong path for weeks.
| What it says | What it means | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Held or withheld | The result exists and is held while an investigation runs, frequently into the centre rather than you | The body’s own complaint channel, then the school, then the zonal or state office |
| Cancelled | A finding of examination malpractice has been made | NECO’s examination malpractice committee |
| Outstanding or missing | A subject has not been released with the rest | Your school or centre, with your identification and centre numbers |
| Released, grade disputed | Nothing is administratively wrong. You disagree with the mark. | Complaints and remark requests go to NECO directly. |
Common questions
What should my complaint contain?
Your registration or index number, the year and diet, the subjects affected, and a plain factual account of what happened. A complaint with none of those cannot be matched to a script.
My result was withheld. What does that mean?
It means the result exists and is held while the body investigates, frequently the centre rather than you. It is not a finding against you.
Where do I complain?
NECO state offices and the national office.
What does it cost to fix?
The complaint channel itself is free. Nobody can release, upgrade or restore a result for a fee, and every offer to do so is a fraud.
Is a cancellation permanent?
Not always. Decisions are reviewed by NECO’s examination malpractice committee, which is slow and which is why nobody can sell you a faster outcome.
Use the body’s own channel
NECO state offices and the national office It is the body’s channel rather than an intermediary’s, and it does not depend on your school being willing to act. That matters more than it sounds: when an investigation concerns a centre, the centre is rarely enthusiastic about pushing the matter along.
Your registration or index number, the year and diet, the subjects affected, and a plain factual account of your own side. A complaint that names no number cannot be attached to a script, and a complaint that argues rather than states is harder to act on than one that simply says what happened.
Problems that start at registration
A misspelled name, a wrong date of birth, a subject you did not choose, a duplicated entry: where a school registers candidates in bulk, all of these originate there. They are far cheaper to fix before the entry closes than after the certificate is printed, which is the entire argument for checking your own entry while there is still time.
The complaint channel is free. Decisions are made by a committee on a schedule. Any agent or contact promising a faster outcome in exchange for a transfer is running a fraud, and paying them adds a second problem to the one you already have.
What to do this week
- Check the result again. Some problems close on their own within days.
- Write down the exact status wording, your number, the diet and the subjects affected.
- Lodge on the body’s own channel.
- Tell your school or centre the same day, and get it in writing that they have escalated.
- Diarise a follow-up two weeks out. Cases that go quiet are cases nobody is chasing.
- Keep a dated file of every submission. If this reaches a committee, the file is your case.
Why these cases move slowly
Decisions are made by NECO’s examination malpractice committee. A committee that meets on a schedule is slow by design, and it is also the reason nobody can sell you a faster outcome. There is no officer to lobby.
One sitting a year, against two for the WAEC private examination.
Build the file from day one
Every case that resolves does so because somebody could match a complaint to a record. Keep the exact status wording, your registration or index number, the diet, the subjects affected, every date you submitted anything and every reply you received. A case that goes quiet is a case nobody is chasing.
Why problems here take the shape they do
Papers are objective, essay and practical papers, entered individually rather than through a school and marked on NECO’s nine-point scale. That decides what can go wrong: a machine-marked paper fails differently from one read by an examiner.
A single external series a year. so a problem that outlasts one cycle costs a year rather than a series.
