How to Pass JAMB UTME Commerce

JAMB UTME Commerce rewards a particular set of habits. What is actually costing you marks, and a six-week plan that fixes it.

Passing Commerce in JAMB UTME is not mainly about working harder. The format here is computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and that decides which habits pay and which are wasted effort.

What you are actually being measured on

The papers are computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and they are marked by machine. There is no method mark, no partial credit and no examiner to persuade. There is no pass. There is a rank, and the only question is whether enough candidates scored below you.

The preparation that fits it: speed and coverage rather than depth. A candidate who knows a topic thoroughly but slowly is at a disadvantage here that would not exist in a written examination.

A six-week plan

  1. Week one. A full past paper under time, in this examination’s format. Mark it honestly. Tag every error.
  2. Week two. The topics your teaching never covered. Highest return per hour.
  3. Week three. Drill the three losses above until they stop happening.
  4. Week four. A second full paper. Compare the error pattern with week one.
  5. Week five. Your weakest component, whether that is the practical, the essay or the objective paper.
  6. Week six. A third paper, then consolidation. No new material.

What the grade buys you

Here the grade is part of a score out of 400 that orders you against every other candidate for a fixed number of places. Commerce is required for business administration, marketing, accounting, banking and finance, and insurance, and it is checked individually at admission. One sitting a year, in a session assigned to you that cannot be changed.

Questions candidates ask about Commerce

How many papers are there?

Objective and essay.

What makes it hard?

The content is broad and shallow, which tempts candidates to skim. The essay then asks for depth on one narrow thing.

What is the most common way candidates lose marks?

Listing without explaining, which caps the mark in every essay.

Where do I get the official syllabus?

From JAMB, on its own site, free. Check the year range on the cover before you use it.

How long do I need?

Six focused weeks will move a grade if the work is aimed at what your diagnostic paper exposed. Six months aimed at topics you already know will not.

Should I get a tutor for this subject?

If your problem is that the topic was never taught, yes, and specifically for those topics. If your problem is presentation or pacing, a tutor helps less than timed practice against the mark scheme.

Is Commerce compulsory?

No. It is a business subject, chosen as one of your electives, and you should choose it because a course you want names it.

What is it required for?

Business administration, marketing, accounting, banking and finance, and insurance.

What makes the subject hard

The content is broad and shallow, which tempts candidates to skim. The essay then asks for depth on one narrow thing.

That changes the plan. A subject that punishes presentation needs practice in presentation. A subject that compounds needs its foundations fixed first. More hours on the wrong layer produce the same result as none.

The three losses to eliminate first

  • Listing without explaining, which caps the mark in every essay.
  • Confusing the functions of institutions that look similar, a merchant bank and a commercial bank.
  • Neglecting business documents, which are easy marks.

Each is worth more than an extra topic learned, because they are losses on material you already know. Fixing a habit converts work you have already done into marks you are currently not getting.

Cover the ground, worst first

  • The nature and scope of commerce.
  • Trade, home and foreign.
  • Aids to trade: transport, warehousing, insurance, banking, advertising.
  • Business units and their formation.
  • Stock exchange and capital markets.
  • Business documents and procedures.
  • Consumer protection.

How to weight your time

Objective and essay.

Split your preparation in roughly that proportion, then adjust towards whichever component your diagnostic exposed.

If you change one thing

For every institution in the syllabus, write its three functions and one thing it cannot do.
