JAMB UTME Commerce: What the Syllabus Covers and How It Is Examined

What JAMB UTME Commerce covers, how its papers are arranged, what makes it hard, and the specific ways candidates lose marks in it.

What Commerce looks like in JAMB UTME is set by how JAMB examines it: computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together. The topic areas matter, but the format decides how you should work them.

How JAMB examines this subject

The format is computer-based multiple choice only, inside one timed session covering all four subjects together, and it is marked by machine. There is no method mark, no partial credit and no examiner to persuade.

There is no pass. There is a rank, and the only question is whether enough candidates scored below you.

The paper structure, and how to weight your time

Objective and essay.

Split your preparation roughly in the proportion the components are weighted. Candidates habitually over-prepare the part they enjoy and meet the other part for the first time in the hall.

What makes it hard

The content is broad and shallow, which tempts candidates to skim. The essay then asks for depth on one narrow thing.

Set that against how this examination works. Speed and coverage rather than depth. A candidate who knows a topic thoroughly but slowly is at a disadvantage here that would not exist in a written examination.

Where marks are lost in this subject

  • Listing without explaining, which caps the mark in every essay.
  • Confusing the functions of institutions that look similar, a merchant bank and a commercial bank.
  • Neglecting business documents, which are easy marks.
The single most useful habit

For every institution in the syllabus, write its three functions and one thing it cannot do.

Turning it into a plan

  1. Get the current syllabus from JAMB and check the year range on the cover.
  2. Write one line per topic area, with a box beside it.
  3. Work a past paper in this examination’s format, computer-based multiple choice only, and tag every question back to a line.
  4. Mark the lines your teaching has never covered. Those are the priority.
  5. Re-weight towards the component carrying the most marks. One sitting a year, in a session assigned to you that cannot be changed.

What a good grade here is worth

In this examination the grade is part of a score out of 400 that orders you against every other candidate for a fixed number of places. Commerce is required for business administration, marketing, accounting, banking and finance, and insurance, and course requirements are checked subject by subject, so a strong overall result with a weak grade here is a disqualification for the course that names it rather than a near miss.

Questions candidates ask about Commerce

How do I turn it into revision?

One line per topic area with a box beside it, then tick the lines off against past papers rather than against your notes. The lines that stay blank are the finding.

Is Commerce compulsory?

No. It is a business subject, chosen as one of your electives, and you should choose it because a course you want names it.

What is it required for?

Business administration, marketing, accounting, banking and finance, and insurance.

How many papers are there?

Objective and essay.

What makes it hard?

The content is broad and shallow, which tempts candidates to skim. The essay then asks for depth on one narrow thing.

What is the most common way candidates lose marks?

Listing without explaining, which caps the mark in every essay.

Where do I get the official syllabus?

From JAMB, on its own site, free. Check the year range on the cover before you use it.

Has the syllabus changed?

Syllabuses are revised on published cycles and old ones stay online after they expire. If the copy you are holding has no year range, you do not know what you are holding.

What the subject covers

Use these topic areas as the frame for your own checklist, then verify the detail against the syllabus JAMB publishes itself, because depth and emphasis shift between curriculum cycles even when the headings do not.

  • The nature and scope of commerce.
  • Trade, home and foreign.
  • Aids to trade: transport, warehousing, insurance, banking, advertising.
  • Business units and their formation.
  • Stock exchange and capital markets.
  • Business documents and procedures.
  • Consumer protection.
