What the fee actually covers
Entry for eight or nine subjects and the sitting of every paper in them. Nothing else is guaranteed.
What it does not cover is the part that surprises families. School candidates buy the result checker PIN separately at ₦5,000. Practical subjects may require materials. And if the certificate is lost there is no replacement to buy at any price.

Every WAEC naira figure you will read anywhere, including here, traces back to a newspaper rather than to WAEC. Two reputable outlets reported the 2026 school fee differently, at ₦27,000 and ₦27,500. Confirm the number with your school before you hand over money.
The 2027 increase, and who it hits
The Federal Government approved a uniform ₦50,000 SSCE fee in a memo signed on 18 June 2026. It covers both WAEC and NECO and takes effect from the 2027 internal SSCE.
That is an increase of roughly 85 percent on the 2026 figure, and it lands on one specific group: students currently in SS2, who will sit in 2027. If you are budgeting for a child in that year, budget ₦50,000, not ₦27,000. Anyone sitting in 2026 was unaffected.
A family entering a child for both WAEC and NECO as insurance paid about ₦57,000 in 2026. The same strategy costs ₦100,000 from 2027.
Private candidates pay differently
If you sit WAEC GCE, the arithmetic changes in your favour in one respect and against you in another.
- In your favour: your registration fee produces two PINs, and the second checks your result. School candidates pay ₦5,000 separately for that, so the private route effectively includes a ₦5,000 service.
- Against you: the ₦500 commission, and no school absorbing any administrative cost on your behalf.
The walk-in route at ₦45,000 is registrable up to 24 hours before a paper. That is an ₦18,000 penalty over the standard fee. It exists for a candidate who discovers late that an admission depends on a subject they do not hold, and it is not a planning strategy.

What you should never pay forNobody can sell you a result upgrade, a grade change, or the release of a withheld result. Those are not services, they are fraud. There is also no legitimate discount on the ₦5,000 e-PIN: it is sold at a fixed price through seven authorised merchants, and since WAEC moved PIN generation to NIN and one-time passwords, roadside vendors have no genuine stock at all.
Getting a receipt
School candidates pay the school, not WAEC, and the school pays WAEC in bulk. That is a normal arrangement and it is also where money goes missing.
Ask for a receipt that states what the payment covers, and ask whether the result checker PIN is included or separate. A school charging noticeably above the reported fee should be able to explain the difference. Many legitimately bundle practical materials or internal mock costs; some do not.
