Yomi BlackWAEC grades every subject on a nine-point scale from A1 down to F9. Anything from A1 to C6 is a credit. D7 and E8 are passes but no Nigerian university accepts them toward entry requirements, and F9 is a fail. The only number that matters for admission is how many credits you hold, and whether English Language and Mathematics are among them.

Why C6 is the line that decides everything
C6 starts at 50 marks. One mark below that is D7, and D7 is worth nothing for admission.
This is the single most consequential boundary in Nigerian secondary education. A candidate on 50 in Mathematics and a candidate on 49 are one mark apart and in completely different positions: the first can apply for a science course, the second cannot apply for most courses at all until they re-sit.
If you are revising and have to choose where to spend your last week, spend it on the subject you are closest to failing rather than the one you are closest to an A1 in. Moving a 47 to a 52 changes your options. Moving a 71 to a 76 does not.
How many credits you actually need
Five, including English Language and Mathematics, is the standard bar for a degree. That phrase is doing a lot of work and it is worth unpacking.
- Five credits, not five passes. A1 to C6 only.
- English and Mathematics are almost always compulsory within those five, whatever the course. A few arts courses relax the Mathematics requirement, but assume it is required unless the institution says otherwise in writing.
- The other three must be relevant to your course. Five credits in the wrong subjects will not admit you to Medicine.
For scale: in 2026, 61.54 percent of WASSCE candidates obtained five credits including English and Mathematics. Roughly two candidates in five did not clear the bar on the first attempt, which is why the private candidate route exists and why so many people use it.
Which subjects countThe exact combination that counts depends on the course you are applying for, and that belongs to the admission process rather than the examination. Check the requirement for your specific course and institution before assuming a subject qualifies.
You can combine results from different bodies
You do not have to get all five credits in one sitting, and you do not have to get them all from WAEC.
NECO states plainly that its SSCE can be combined with a WAEC result, and NABTEB results are accepted on the same footing. A candidate who has three credits from WAEC and picks up two more from NECO GCE holds five credits.
Most institutions accept a maximum of two sittings. Check the limit for your institution before planning a third attempt.
Is WAEC marking curved?
There is no published evidence that WAEC adjusts grade boundaries year to year, and WAEC does not describe its marking as norm-referenced.
Treat the bands in the table above as fixed. The theory that boundaries move depending on how the cohort performed circulates every August and has no source behind it.
What nobody else will tell youThe numeric mark ranges in the table above are consistent across multiple independent sources and are almost certainly correct. They also do not appear anywhere on WAEC’s own domains. WAEC publishes the letter grades; it does not publish the mark boundaries behind them. Every site presenting the numbers as official, including the ones that look most authoritative, is passing on secondary information without saying so. We publish the same numbers because they are the best available, and we tell you what they rest on.
